Their opponents today are playing in this tournament for the first time this century, having last appeared at this event in 1998. Their best outing came at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland when they finished third, losing 6-1 in the semi-final in Basel to eventual winners West Germany. They made it to this tournament after finishing top of their qualifying group ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Cyprus and San Marino to make it to their eighth World Cup.
