Back in Time for the Factory history
The women go back to 1983 to learn how an unsung army of female workers fought to keep their jobs in the face of foreign competition. A change in government at the end of the 70s had brought a dramatic change in economic policy. The Conservatives' policy of encouraging businesses to stand on their own two feet without financial support from government meant that many of the factories in the south Wales valleys began to struggle. Throughout the early 80s, big companies closed their factories and those that managed to stay open were battling against the steady march of globalisation and cheap labour abroad.
