In the late 19th century, Ephraim Winslow is hired to work for a month on an isolated island off the coast of New England, under the supervision of an irritable old man named Thomas Wake. Winslow tries to stay sane as Wake assigns him a series of arduous tasks, but that seems to be the toughest job of all.
