Following the residents of the Outer Hebridean islands of Uist and Barra as they share life's ups and downs with resilience, humour and a powerful sense of community. From Berneray in the North to Vatersay in the south, the southern isles of the Western Isles archipelago off the north west coast of Scotland are home to over 5,000 people. In the first programme, young musicians in Barra prepare for summer festivals, while Donald Macphee gives an insight into the world of metal detecting in an area rich in history in Benbecula. Morag and Neill get their dancing shoes on to teach quadrilles classes at the Ceòlas festival in South Uist, and Berneray welcomes shepherds from Scotland, Ireland and Europe to the annual sheepdog trials held on the island
