Great Continental Railway Journeys

Michael Portillo travels across north-west France, exploring the regions of Brittany and Normandy and their historic connections with Great Britain. He begins in Nantes, where he finds various fantastic creatures - both animal and mechanical - in the city's former shipyards. In the Gulf of Morbihan, Michael investigates a rounded stone cairn which conceals a 6,000-year-old burial chamber and in Lorient, he visits the enormous German submarine base from which the Nazis directed the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War
